From linear to circular

Climate

The transition to a circular, climate-neutral or even positive economy is extremely urgent: the linear system is crossing the planet's baundaries. CO₂ emissions and pollution have to be reduced.

Circularity

The Netherlands wants to be fully circular by 2050. Much still needs to be done to achieve this goal, especially within the industry and food sectors. Currently, residual flows are generally discarded and often incinerated.

SPORO: for a circular and inclusive economy

Reduced CO₂ emissions

In our first-of-a-kind factory, SPORO will upcycle over 3.000 tons of residual waste each year, preventing at least 1.000 tons of CO₂ emissions. By producing circular substrates, we prevent at least 0,3 kg of emissions per kg of waste.

Circularity

Our substrate consists largely of local residues from other production processes, such as brewer's grains, coffee grounds and wood chips. This way, we avoid using new (virgin) materials, such as freshly cut wood, and reduce the ecological footprint of our production process. We also reduce the dependency on and use of imported raw materials.

Energy savings

Thanks to our innovative sterilisation method, we use at least 30% less energy than conventional methods. In addition, we use renewable energy as much as possible.

Locality

At SPORO, we use local waste streams as our ingredients. We upcycle urban waste into substrate that is used for local urban food production, creating a local and circular supply chain within the city.

Inclusivity

In addition to our ecological impact, we are actively committed to social inclusion and a people-centered work culture. Therefore, at SPORO, we create jobs for people with a distance to the labor market. We support our employees in their professional and personal development, offering guidance and support.

SPORO is building a demonstration plant in Rotterdam for the circular production of substrate for functional and exotic mushrooms. In our factory, we convert local urban waste streams into new valuable raw materials, with the aim of building local sustainable food chains and strengthening the circular economy. Our factory is made possible by our partners.
